Resistance Exercise Strategies for Sarcopenic Obesity in Elderly People
Yoon Jin-Hwan

Abstract
The number of obese elderly people is increasing worldwide. Aging is associated with increased fat mass and reduced muscle mass and strength. Sarcopenic obesity is associated with a loss of independence, metabolic complications, and represents a major public health challenge in elderly people. Recent studies show that resistance exercise has remarkable beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal system including prevention and treatment of sarcopenic obesity. Resistance exercise not only decreases fat mass and central obesity, but also increases muscle mass and strengthens the muscle. Resistance training should be central component of sarcopenic obesity prevention programs along with an aerobic exercise in elderly people.
